Hiving of a 'list of roads in the UK subject to direct action protests'[edit]

This is a copy of the discussion which resulted in the list of road protests being split off from Road protest (UK)

There is a proposal to split of a 'List of roads in the UK subject to direct action protests'. I would be in favour of this, although this article would continue to the current day looking at the sociological and governance issues coming out of these current protests. Should this hived off article be 'anti-road only' or also 'pro-road' campaigns?PeterIto PeterIto (talk) 12:13, 17 January 2008 (UTC) [reply]

I would suggest that we hive off this article and include both 'notable' current protests and also past protests. We will need to define 'notable' at some point. My reason for including past protests is that it will provide a vessel to contain details about smaller, but significant, protests that don't warrant their own article. Each protest can have 5-10 lines max describing to key issues, activities and link out to more resources. Major protests will link to their own articles.I suggest this article is only for anti-road protests to avoid it getting to long and arguementative, this should be clear from the title and leader and there should be clear links to siting promoting the schemes where they are available but pro-campaigns as such should be the focus of a different article.PeterIto (talk) 12:59, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do like the idea of a list. There were a very large number of camps in the late eighties, Do or Die claims 34 in 1999 [1] (not all roads though). --Salix alba (talk) 00:28, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

To be notable for this article, an entry should be able to demonstrate a significant activity and organisation over a period of time either for or against the scheme or both.

I suggest it should cover any protests that relate to road building anywhere in the UK or Ireland (it was suggested that scheme in Ireland should also be included as there has been considerable two way communication and support between the two counties on this subject and there are also a lot of current schemes in Ireland. I suggest that we welcome entries from Ireland, and consider changing the title of the article in due course if necessary).

Structure of entries[edit]

The title of the entry should be the official scheme name if there is one, or a neutral description of the scheme (not the name of the campaign itself).

The first paragraph should detail the proposed works in neutral terms.

The second paragraph should provide basic information for any 'pro-campaign' (if there is one), summarising its methods and activities.

The third paragraph should provide basic information for any 'anti-campaign' (if there is one), summarising its methods and activities.

An entry should be in the 'current protests' for the period until either the scheme is officially cancelled, or is opened to traffic, or when all significant protesting and organisation of protesters has ceased. A past scheme may of course become current again if circumstances change.

For major protests such as Twyford Down that have there one articles there should only be a stub article here.

For protests that relate to a particular road or town then a stub article should be added to the appropriate main article linking to the main article here.

Claims should as always be fully referenced.

Sort order[edit]

I suggest that current and past schemes should be sorted alphabetically by title although past schemes are sorted into periods to match the period in Road protest (UK).

Please help build this article[edit]

There must be some 100 notable protests in the past 30 years and I don't intend to create all the entries myself so please chip in.PeterIto (talk) 09:48, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of particular protests[edit]

Should the A14 protest be included? I am not clear how active it is. Clearly there are people doing things and who feel strongly but has it reached the threshold for inclusion in this list and where is that threshold? Also, what about the Whaplode and Moulton bypass. For sure they are arguing for a bypass and have had a march and done stuff but is that enough for inclusion in this article or does it require more. Possibly we should require evidence of national media attention as a demonstration of notability and I am not clear if these ones achieves it? PeterIto (talk) 10:36, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
